Biography:
Chloé Dupont received a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a special focus on Electrical Energy and Smart Grids, from University of Mons (Belgium) in 2023. She is currently working on a joint PhD thesis with the Power Systems & Market Research Group (University of Mons) and the Laboratory of Electrical Engineering and Power electronics (L2EP, Centrale Lille, France). Her research focuses on bridging the gap between machine learning and decision-making in modern power systems. Special attention is given to integrated energy systems exploiting the tight link between the gas and electricity networks.

Flexibility coming from gas-fired power plants is still a need in the ongoing energy transition. Therefore, the link between electricity and gas networks is tight. However, in the current European regulatory framework, both energy systems are independently operated. This may result in unreliable and suboptimal decisions by preventing to leverage natural complementarities such as the ability of gas networks to provide flexibility (by storing gas in the pipelines) to mitigate the uncertainty from wind and photovoltaic generation. Hence, this project proposes a regulation-compliant solution towards integrated energy systems, by performing the short-term planning of the electricity grid informed by both the electricity and gas network constraints. Practically, the goal of the project is to address the fundamental challenges involved by such an improved coordination since both energy systems are characterized by non-linear behaviours. To that end, we combine traditional optimization-based models with data-driven techniques design a generic decision framework applicable to large-scale problems. The model is then enriched with new, advanced risk-based constraints to account for uncertainties and incomplete information in modern energy systems.
