Research activity:

Biography:

Jamal Faraji is a PhD student at the Electrical Power Engineering Unit of University of Mons, working on the Energy Transition Funds (ETF) project, ALEXANDER. He earned his master's degree in Energy Systems Engineering from the University of Kashan. From 2020 to 2021, he served as a Research Assistant at the University of Kashan as a member of Iran’s National Elites Foundation, contributing to a project on the reliability analysis of modern power systems. In May 2024, he spent three months as a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Munich.

His current research interests include electricity markets, energy communities, behavioral economics, and operations research.

Jamal Faraji in his PhD thesis explores the role of user behavior in enhancing the effectiveness of energy communities within local energy and flexibility markets. Energy communities are essential to achieving climate neutrality in the European Union by promoting self-sufficiency and integrating distributed energy resources. Recognizing that individual member behavior significantly influences community outcomes, this thesis aims to develop a framework that incorporates both the heterogeneous preferences and bounded rationality of users in centralized energy sharing problems. By addressing how these behavioral factors impact energy communities' performance, the thesis also explores optimal user participation in energy and flexibility markets and examines strategies for the community actors to manage the effects of sub-optimal decision-making.
